Historical Context of the Colors

• WWI & Early Service: Marines originally wore Army khaki shades, leather boots, and gear consistent with early 20th-century infantry standards.
• WWII – Frogskin Camouflage: Introduced in 1942, this two-sided, reversible camouflage featured a green-dominant “jungle side” and a tan/brown “beach side.” Issued to Marines fighting in the Pacific, it was one of the first large-scale U.S. camouflage patterns and is still iconic in military history.
• WWII & Beyond – Olive Drab: Vehicles, helmets, and much of the equipment used by the USMC were painted in Olive Drab, consistent with Army standards, but often weathered heavily in Pacific campaigns.
